Pournami

பௌர்ணமி – Full Moon

What:: Full Moon day; powerful for worship, meditation, vrathams.
When:: Once each lunar month.
Notes:: Popular days include Chitra Pournami (Chithirai) and Karthigai Pournami.

Amavasai

அமாவாசை – New Moon

What:: New Moon day; important for pitru (ancestor) rites.
When:: Once each lunar month.
Notes:: In Tamil Nadu, Aadi Amavasai and Thai Amavasai are widely observed for tarpanam.

Pradosham

பிரதோஷம்

What:: Auspicious evening period for Shiva worship.
When:: Trayodashi (13th tithi) twilight, twice a month.
Notes:: Named by weekday—Soma (Mon), Bhauma (Tue), Shani (Sat). Observed with abhishekam and fasting till pradosha kālam.

Sivarathri / Shivaratri

சிவராத்திரி

What:: Night dedicated to Lord Shiva; vigil, abhishekam, japa.
When:: Monthly on Krishna Paksha Chaturdashi; Maha Shivaratri occurs once a year (Maasi/Phalgun).
Notes:: Fasting and night-long prayers for inner discipline and divine grace.

Sasthi / Shashti

ஷஷ்டி

What:: Sixth lunar day; special for Lord Murugan.
When:: Every month; especially Skanda Shashti in Aippasi culminating in Soorasamharam.
Notes:: Many observe fasts and visit Murugan temples.

Kirithigai / Krithigai

கிருத்திகை

What:: Day when the Moon transits Krithigai star; dear to Murugan.
When:: Monthly; the grand Karthigai Deepam occurs in the Karthigai month.
Notes:: Lamps are lit; special abhishekams and temple processions are held.

Chandra Darisanam

சந்திர தரிசனம்

What:: First sighting of the Moon after Amavasai.
When:: Evening after New Moon, at the start of Valarpirai (waxing).
Notes:: Considered auspicious to view and pray for wellbeing, clarity and peace of mind.

Ashtami

அஷ்டமி

What:: Eighth lunar day.
When:: Twice a month (waxing & waning).
Notes:: Krishna Janmashtami (Gokulashtami) falls on Krishna Paksha Ashtami—fasting and Krishna worship.

Navami

நவமி

What:: Ninth lunar day.
When:: Twice a month.
Notes:: Rama Navami (Chaitra Shukla Navami) celebrates Lord Rama’s birth with puja and bhajans.

Thiruvonam / Shravana

திருவோணம்

What:: Nakshatra Shravana (Thiruvonam); sacred for Vishnu.
When:: Monthly when the Moon is in Thiruvonam.
Notes:: In Kerala, Onam is celebrated when Thiruvonam occurs in Chingam; in Tamil tradition, special Perumal/Vishnu temple observances.

Karinaal

கரிநாள்

What:: Days flagged by some Tamil almanacs as inauspicious for first-time starts.
When:: Varies by panchangam/tradition; listed as a quick “avoid” indicator.
Notes:: Treat as a caution marker; final decisions should be taken with full muhurtham guidance.

Chaturthi

சதுர்த்தி

What:: Fourth lunar day; associated with Sri Ganesha.
When:: Twice a month.
Notes:: Vinayaka Chaturthi (Shukla Chaturthi in Avani) is the grand festival; families also observe monthly vrata.

Sankatahara Chaturthi

சங்கடஹர சதுர்த்தி

What:: Krishna Paksha Chaturthi devoted to Ganesha to remove obstacles.
When:: Every month; evening moonrise is especially significant.
Notes:: Fasting till moonrise; darshan of the Moon and Ganesha puja conclude the vrata.

Ekadasi

ஏகாதசி

What:: Eleventh lunar day; prime fasting day for Vishnu devotees.
When:: Twice a month—Shukla Ekadasi (waxing) and Krishna Ekadasi (waning).
Notes:: Many observe strict/partial fasts and perform Parana (fast-break) at the prescribed time; each Ekadasi (e.g., Vaikuntha, Nirjala) has its own significance.
